Our botanical garden is home to the most beautiful tropical botanical species in the world. If you love the green sights and colourful flowers of Mauritius, you will enjoy the botanical garden of Pamplemousses a lot. A selection of the most special plants from Mauritius and elsewhere in the world are the decor of this very old garden. The garden is 37 hectares big, with paths everywhere, making it nice to walk through..
The official name of the garden is: Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) Botanical Garden. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam was the first president of independent Mauritius. He was not the founder of the garden though. The garden was built in 1729 by a frenchman who called it Mon Plaisir (My joy). It was the first botanical garden of the southern hemisphere. In 1770 Frenchman Pierre Poivre planted trees and plant coming from all over the world. The garden has gone through good and tough times. It was even used as a nursery during the malaria epidemic of 1866.
